Chapter Sixteen

Kathryn

Eyes fluttering open while I awaken to my personal hell, I am reminded of the locked door that encloses me within the white walls I have called my cell for… I have no idea how long I have been here.

I begin to take inventory of my injuries before trying to adjust my position. My hands apply pressure to my eyes and cheek noticing there is no swelling and the skin around my lids is no longer tender. Next, I continue to my ribs. I fear the pain as I have before, so I take my time with weak arms and start between my breasts. Gradually applying more pressure, I move my fingers across each rib one at a time.

I toss the sheet off my body and lift my t-shirt over my head as I sit up. The bruising that had yellowed and decorated the majority of my mid-section was completely gone. There was no sign of being kicked repeatedly. Blinking to clear my vision, I notice a new color of shirt and new panties folded at the foot of my bed.

I place my feet on the floor and test their strength, balance may be difficult but manageable. Using the headboard, I lift myself up with little assistance. I feel stronger and more energized than I have since I was knocked out.

Quickly, I make my way to the bathroom to take my reflection seriously. I have to be dreaming.

I am standing naked in front of the mirror as I notice subtle differences in my appearance.

My hair has been brushed and tied to the side. I am slightly thinner than I was, not surprising since I haven’t been eating well and I haven’t had a meal since the incident with Xander and Carter. I look the same but I feel different. The demons that have haunted me may have given up on me, maybe moved on to someone else. I will survive this, I will find William and I will tell him everything.

The lips of the woman I see have a story to tell. Her eyes flicker with determination and fight. I am this woman and I am ready to release my demons. I am ready to accept my fate rather than run from happiness. Now I have to figure a way out.

I make my way back to my sleeping quarters to get dressed. The white t-shirt is soft and warm, smells like fresh flowers. The pink panties fit perfectly to my smaller frame. I decide to sit and wait for a visitor.

Every day, someone has come to check on me. My clothes have been changed and the tray of food is rotated out. The plate contains crackers and a cheese spread today. I grab the glass of water off the table and race to the bathroom to dump it and clean the glass.

I am so thirsty I am willing to use the same poisoned cup, taking my chances with a good scrub. My throat craves the comfort only water can provide.
